Indiana Pi Bill

Sunday, March 14, 2010 by Blogger Qrodo

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indiana_Pi_Bill

The Indiana Pi Bill is the popular name for bill #246 of the 1897 sitting of the Indiana General Assembly, one of the most famous attempts to establish scientific truth by legislative fiat. Despite that name, the main result claimed by the bill is a method to square the circle, rather than to establish a certain value for π, although the bill does contain text that appears to dictate various incorrect values of π, such as 3.2.

The bill never became law, due to the intervention of a mathematics professor who happened to be present in the legislature.

The impossibility of squaring the circle using only compass and straightedge, suspected since ancient times, was rigorously proven in 1882 by Ferdinand von Lindemann. Better approximations of π than those inferred from the bill have been known since ancient times.

Congratulations to the Italian team with Enrico Garozzo, Alfredo Rota, Paolo Pizzo and Matthew Trager.

World cup competition for national teams at Challenge Bernadotte in Stockholm ended on Sunday afternoon. Italy beat Poland in a very dramatic final which had to be decided in sudden death. Poland stayed on top for a long while, despite having to substitute one fencer due to injury. After 7 of the 9 matches, Poland was in the lead  33-30. Enters Paolo Pizzo, a highly accomplished and intensive fencer who evens the score to 39-39. After the 9th and final match, the score was still tied; 41-41. Sumo wrestling

Monday, February 22, 2010 by Blogger Qrodo

Sumo wrestling is Japan’s national sport. It originated in ancient times to entertain the Shinto gods. Many of the rituals with religious background are still performed. Yokozuna (横綱, yokozuna) is the highest rank in sumo. When a wrestler reaches the rank of yokozuna, he cannot lose this status, but is expected to retire when his time is due. Many former Sumo wrestlers remain active in the sumo world as members of the Japan Sumo Association.

The one currently active yokozuna is Hakuhō (白鵬), the 69th yokozuna, from Mongolia, promoted in May 2007.

Taihō Kōki (大鵬幸喜) was the 48th Yokozuna in the Japanese sport of sumo wrestling. He is generally regarded as the greatest sumo wrestler of the post-war period. He became a yokozuna in 1961 at the age of 21, the youngest ever at the time, and he won a record 32 tournaments between 1960 and 1971.

The basic rules of sumo are simple: the wrestler who first touches the ground with anything besides the soles of his feet, or who leaves the ring before his opponent, loses. The dohyō (土俵) is the ring in which sumo wrestling bouts are held. A modern dohyō is a circle of rice-straw bales 4.55 meters in diameter, mounted on a square platform of clay 6.7m on a side, and 34 to 60 cm high. The fights themselves usually last only a few seconds, or in rare cases, about a minute.

MainConcept H.264

Tuesday, February 16, 2010 by Blogger Qrodo

Qrodo is adding support for Mpeg/H.264. Better compression and better perceived video quality compared to the old ON2 VP 6. However it requires more CPU power. Use a dual core Intel for high resolution broadcasts. More browsers are starting to support the <video> tag, where Mpeg/H.264 and/or Ogg/Theora will become natively supported in the browser.

Bearded Man playing golf live on Qrodo, NOT!

Tuesday, January 19, 2010 by Kenneth Pernyer

Moses, Jesus, and a bearded man were playing golf.

Moses pulled up to the tee and drove a long one in the middle of the fairway,
but rolled directly toward a water hazard. Quickly, Moses raised his club,
the water parted and it rolled to the other side safe and sound.

Next, Jesus walks up to the tee and hits a nice long one directly toward
the same water trap. It landed in the center of the pond and hovered over
the water. Jesus walked out on the pond and chipped it up onto the green.

The bearded man gets up and sort of randomly whacks the ball. It heads out
over the fence and into oncoming traffic on a nearby street. It bounces
off a truck and hits a nearby tree, it bounces onto the roof of a nearby
shack and rolls down into the gutter, down the downspout, out onto the fairway
and right toward the very same pond. It hits a little stone and bounces out
over the water and onto a lily pad where it rested quietly.
Suddenly, a very large bullfrog jumped up on the lily pad and snatched the
ball into his mouth. An eagle swooped down and grabbed the frog and flew away.

As they passed over the green, the frog squealed with fright and dropped
the ball which bounced right into the hole for a beautiful hole-in-one.

Moses turned to Jesus and said, “I hate playing with your dad.”
